Frequently Asked Questions

Of course, we get a lot of questions. Most are about the business, but some are about construction in general. Regardless of the question, we will always try to answer your questions as honestly and straightforwardly as possible.

Here’s a small collection of some of the most common questions we’ve answered for property owners like yourself.

  • 1.WHAT IS A GENERAL CONTRACTOR?
A general contractor is unique in that they don’t only specialize in one area of construction — think of a steel structural contractor, or maybe a roofing contractor. Instead, they are an expert in many forms of construction and experts in solving problems. They see the big picture and know how the figurative pieces of the puzzle will all come together.

As much as they are a construction professional, an above-average contractor is also a people person! They want the customer to be happy and want to understand the problem the customer is experiencing.

    Our mission is this:
Design and build unique & refined solutions to our customer’s challenging construction needs.”

  • 3.HOW MUCH WOULD MY IDEA COST TO BUILD?

An easy to ask question, wildly difficult to answer because a new construction depends upon numerous factors, all of which alter the price of a build, from the cost of the material, how it’s installed, and the specialized techniques to build it. Finishes and existing conditions make all the difference.

Custom Craft Builders is prepared to quickly and efficiently work with you to establish the scope of your new construction so that you are pleased with your budget and love the final product.

  • 5.WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL JOB COST?

At Custom Craft we are willing to make your dream a reality, regardless of the size. Every project has a cost at the end of the day, and those costs vary dramatically! A small job using only the absolutely top of the line materials and unique patterns might cost the same as an entire new house. But for the sake of understanding, our projects vary anywhere between $5,000 – $900,00+.

Contact us and we can chat about what your budget looks like, and we’ll offer a solution to make your vision, tangible.

  • 7.HOW BIG OF A PROJECT DO YOU HANDLE?

If it’s defined as residential, it’s not too big for us. Contact us and see how we can make your massive dream a reality of tomorrow. We’re experts in creating solutions for our customers’ challenging construction needs and goals.

We’re certain we’ll do the same for you – no matter how big or demanding you believe your project to be.

  • 9.WHY ARE YOU MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHERS WE SPOKE WITH?

A fair question to ask, and really dependent on WHO you’re talking with.

There are few things truly worth paying more for, some say a good mattress will pay dividends for years, but at the end of the day, experience and perfection cost more.

Custom Craft Builders is relentless in ensuring only the best craftsmanship goes into your new construction because, at the end of the day, that’s what every customer expects and deserves.

To produce perfect construction results, experience counts – and great experience will cost more — even while every detail we tackle for you; big or small, is scrutinized because Details Matter.

Additionally, we commit more areas of expertise to individual efforts in every project, which promises a better outcome.

At Custom Craft, we have a saying that accompanies us to every single job: “Do it right or do it again.”

  • 11.WHAT’S YOUR WARRANTY PROCESS?

As we mentioned above:  Details Matter. Right off the bat, we shoot for perfection. Sometimes though even through a perfect new construction, for one reason or another, materials could fail, or our ever-changing Minnesota climate may cause something to deform, shift, or change for reasons out of our control.

We pride ourselves in having so few warranty claims that require our attention after the build is completed, but it does happen. We offer every new construction an unconditional 1/2/10 warranty (required by the state of Minnesota).

  • 2.WHAT IS A DESIGN BUILD FIRM?

You know what a general contractor is, but what is a “design build firm”? Great question, because they aren’t all that common. Rarely do general contractors have dedicated designers on site, on staff, to work with the customer and draw up stunning new designs for your home or business’s new construction.

Now, at Custom Craft Builders, we go one step further. It’s not unheard of for a general contractor to have a designer(s) on their staff, but what is uncommon, is when the designer designs the new construction the way a builder builds.

Lost you there? Let us clarify.

All too often, a designer without any hands-on experience building new construction will design a visually appealing and beautiful new construction, but when it comes time for the contractor to have boots on the ground building the project, problems arise. What looks great isn’t always the best design.

Premature failure of new construction is often due to poor design and little to no thought to how the new construction will hold up to use, and the harsh Minnesota season.

  • 4.HOW DO I GET FROM POINT A TO B WITH MY PROJECT?
You know what you want in the end, but you don’t know how to start or how to get there?

You’re not alone in your uncertainty! We’re here for a reason.

The team at Custom Craft Builders knows better than anyone just how intimidating the building process can seem, but we’ve been around the block a few times and can draw up what your new construction could look like.

Your build is your oyster, ready to be transformed. This is where a design build firm shines — we are with you from start to finish to ensure your vision becomes a reality that you’ll love for years.

  • 6.HOW SMALL OF JOBS DO YOU DO?

When we are approached by a customer with an idea, the first questions are not to see how big or small a job is, but instead how it fits into our work.

Big or small we do it all, but it’s important to understand that we work hands-on with many customers at once. It all comes down to balancing them together and ensuring every customer receives exactly what they dreamed of and are paying for!

Additionally, every job has its own set of unique steps to achieve that one-of-a-kind outcome that demands numerous steps outside of what many customers see.

A “smaller” project may take longer than what one might imagine but trust us when we say it’s worth it.

  • 8.WHY ARE YOU BETTER?

We’ll never say we are “better” than any other contractor because our work speaks for itself. We will, however, make the claim that we are pretty great, and not because we say we are but because we care about your job just as much as you do

That’s why we will always scrutinize the little details – because  Details Matter!

  • 10.DO YOU HIRE SUBCONTRACTORS?

Absolutely! When a job grows beyond what we can do on our own, we’ll call in support. But not just any subcontractor with the most inexpensive price tag. No, that is not us whatsoever.

We team up with only a small handful of sub-contractors we have no problem sharing a meal with on any given day.

We see our subcontractors as team members rather than hands-for-hire. Their work is a part of our work when we’re working together because we’re a team-based company. Taking on a project without the right amount of team help often turns out poorly for every party involved—a realistic assessment of our building capacity allows us to bring in our valued extended team members that share our passion for the details.

  • 12.WHAT IS A 1/2/10 WARRANTY?

Understanding the warranties provided by [any] builder in the State of Minnesota should help you know your rights and how to be prepared if an issue were to arise.

The exact language from the Minnesota Office of the Revisor is the following:

    “(a) during the one-year period from and after the warranty date the dwelling shall be free from defects caused by faulty workmanship and defective materials due to noncompliance with building standards;

    (b) during the two-year period from and after the warranty date, the dwelling shall be free from defects caused by faulty installation of plumbing, electrical, heating, and cooling systems due to noncompliance with building standards; and

    (c) during the ten-year period from and after the warranty date, the dwelling shall be free from major construction defects due to noncompliance with building standards.”

A simple way to understand it is:
One year for pretty much everything, two years for mechanical systems, and ten years for the structural parts of the building.

This warranty stays with the home, even if it is sold to another owner within the period when the warranty is still active on the home.
